프랙털은 우주, 지구, 자연현상, 심지어 인간의 신체 구조에서도 나타난다. 어찌 보면 우리의 삶 자체가 프랙털이라고 볼 수도 있다.
설숙영 작가는 카오스의 상황에서 나타나는 질서를 탐구하였고 카오스 속의 질서를 결정유가 표출해 내는 프랙털로 해석하고 있다.
결정유는 유약의 원료에 첨가된 금속원료가 고온에서 녹아 흐르는 상태가 되면 가마의 온도를 낮춰 결정을 꽃피우게 하는 방식인데 이때 꽃처럼 확산되는 현상이 프랙털 원리에 의해 자연 생성되는 것이다. 불과 온도 차이가 만들어내는 우연적이고 신비한 예술적 현상을 우주의 생성 원리로 바라보고 있다.
설숙영작가가 사용하는 주요 조형요소는 개념요소로 점, 선, 면, 공간을 활용하여 간결하고 압축적인 화면 구성을 추구한다.
즉, 우주의 생성 원리를 바라보는 시각이 점, 선, 면, 공간으로 환원할 수 있다는 발상이다.
원시 우주의 생성 과정을 표현하고 있는 작품들 외에도 작품 속에는 융복합의 표현 요소를 다수 혼합하고 있다. 융복합의 재료로써 금, 크리스탈, 자개, 물감 등의 재료가 결합되어 있고 형상으로써는 곤충, 식물, 어류 등이 결합되어 있다.
이는 작가가 4차산업혁명의 동시대성을 표현하려는 의도로 읽힌다. In the Garden 작품의 경우는 매우 실험성이 강하여 기존에 만들어진 도자회화의 결과물을 촬영하고 이를 재 프린팅하여 그 위에 순금 안료 소성 기법으로 마감한 작품이다. 미술연합방송
기법과 표현재료, 대상의 결합 모두 4차산업혁명의 융복합성을 잘 나타내는 작품으로 보인다. 현대미술에서 작가의 실험성, 전위성, 진취성은 매우 중요한 태도인데 설숙영작가는 쉼없는 실험을 이어가며 인류역사에서 가장 오래된 예술 표현 방식인 도자기로 시작하여 가장 현대적인 사진과 프링팅을 모두 사용하고 있다.
형상으로써 결합인 물고기, 연꽃, 나비, 벌, 맨드라미 수박 등은 조선시대의 민화에 주로 등장하는 소재이다. 많은 사물 중에서도 특별히 이 소재들을 선택한 것은 과거와 현재의 융복합을 의도한 것으로 보인다. 설숙영 작가의 작품은 세련된 바탕 위에 전통적인 형상의 조화와 재료의 오묘한 결합으로 융복합예술의 가능성을 확장하고 있다.
Fractal Ceramic Painting that Contains the Mysteries of the Universe

A fractal is a phenomenon that gave order to the chaotic universe after the Big Bang.
Fractals appear in the universe, the earth, natural phenomena, and even the structure of the human body.
In a way, our life itself can be seen as a fractal.
Seol Sook-young explores the order that appears in the chaos and interprets the order as a fractal expressed by crystal oil.
Crystal glaze is a method in which the metal raw material added to the raw material of the glaze melts at a high temperature and becomes a flowing state. After that, the flowing metal raw material becomes bloomed crystals by lowering the temperature of the kiln.
The accidental and mysterious artistic phenomenon created by fire and temperature difference is viewed as the principle of creation of the universe.
The main formative elements used by Sook-young Seol are conceptual elements, and she pursues a concise and compressed screen composition by utilizing points, lines, planes, and spaces.
In other words, it is the idea that the perspective on the principle of creation of the universe can be reduced to points, lines, planes, and spaces, which is in line with the ideas of Cézanne and Mondrian, the leading figures in modern art.
In particular, in the works of Universe, the expression of the mysterious expansion of space, where you can feel the expansion of the universe after the Big Bang, is composed of points, lines, and planes, thus making the beauty of space reach its peak.
Sook-young Seol has studied the mysteries of the universe for a long time.
The ‘Universe, Aurora’ shown in the main title are all fractal phenomena, and the choice of crystal glaze in ceramic painting seems to be an excellent choice in the selection of materials that can best express this.
In addition to the works expressing the creation process of the primitive universe, many expressive elements of convergence are mixed in the works.
Materials such as gold, crystal, nacre, and paint are combined as materials for convergence with insects, plants, and fish combined as shapes.
This is read as the artist's intention to express the contemporaneity of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
One of Sook-young Seol’s works, “In the Garden” is very experimental, which means it is a work of photographing the result of a previously made ceramic painting followed by reprinting and finishing it with the firing technique of pure gold pigment on top of it.
The combination of techniques, expressive materials, and objects all seem to be the works that well represent the convergence of the 4th Industrial Revolution.
An artist's experimental, avant-garde, and enterprising attitude are very important in contemporary art, and Seol Sook-young continues her ceaseless experimentation, starting with ceramics, the oldest form of artistic expression in human history, and using all of the most modern photography and printing.
Fish, lotus flower, butterfly, bee, and cockscomb watermelon, which are combined as shapes, are materials that mainly appear in folk paintings of the Joseon Dynasty.
It seems that Seol Suk-young's choice of these materials among many objects expresses her intention to converge the past and the present.
Seol Sook-young's work expands the possibilities of convergence art with the harmony of traditional shapes and the subtle combination of materials on a sophisticated background.
